Over centuries, boats in Bangladesh provide livelihood to people and form their heritage. Boats define their timeless identity across riverine and coastal Bangladesh. So many designs evolved thanks to indigenous design thinking flourishing thru communities.
Working with the last remaining master carpenters, a Bangladeshi NGO, FRIENDSHIP, documents/preserves the knowledge-heritage of ancient technology of boat building. They design the miniature replicas of some of the boats with the original carpenters and employing authentic techniques and materials.
Bangladesh Embassy in the Netherlands collected six of the hand-made boats from FRIENDSHIP, and showcased those at the National Day celebration (26 March 2024) and since preserve those at the Embassy.
